Lewis Hamilton cut a bemused figure after a en-second penalty derailed his Mexico City Grand Prix.

The Brt was handed a penalty for going off the track and gaining an advantage by missing the escape road, dropping him from the podium placed to a P8 finish.

However, after a wild start that saw four cars go side-by-side into turn one, no penalties were handed out, despite Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc cutting across the grass.

"I'm the only one to get a ten-second penalty. It was kind of nuts, a ten-second stop-and-go," said the seven-time world champion.

There was plenty more scrutiny for the FIA after the Mexico City Grand Prix, leading to a statement being released by the governing body after the race.

A late race retirement for Carlos Sainz saw a virtual safety car come out with only a few laps left, and although it ended with one lap remaining, the battles for P2 and P4 were neutralised, stopping what could have been a grandstand finish.

Max Verstappen was chasing Charles Leclerc for P2 right at the end of the race, but the Dutchman had that chance taken away from him due to the intervention from the FIA.

Along with that, a shocking near-miss also occurred earlier in the race, with Liam Lawson almost colliding with two marshals out on track when they came to collect debris at turn 1.
