Nine-time Silverstone Grand Prix winner Lewis Hamilton was left disappointed after finishing fifth in qualifying. The home hero had looked in the fight all weekend.
The feat seemed almost impossible given the results so far. Still, from FP1 onwards, the British driver showed strong qualifying pace, helped by an SF-25 that finally looks quick after the floor upgrades introduced in Austria last weekend.
Beating such a fast McLaren, which excels through Silverstone’s long sweeping corners, turned out not to be easy. Lando Norris was sharp in front of his home crowd after his victory just a week ago.
However, it was wildcard Max Verstappen who took pole position. The Red Bull driver visibly struggled in practice but still managed to take a brilliant pole, which many did not expect.
Alpine's Franco Colapinto crashed in Q1, adding to the worries for the Enstone team. Elsewhere, both Williams drivers missed out on Q3, as did Yuki Tsunoda.
Despite losing out on pole, Lewis Hamilton was still positive to be in the battle in his Ferrari.
"I'm really pleased with the progress. I'm really pleased with the direction. My engineer and I have been really gelling a lot better in terms of how we set the car up. I was much happier in the car, and the lap was really nice up until the last corner, just a bit of understeer. I don't know if it was the kerb that put me a little wide, but then I just lost it," Hamilton said after qualifying.
