The seventh round of the 2025 Formula 1 season and first of a European triple header continues with the second free practice session of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix. Follow the second session of fast action at the historic Imola Circuit in Italy here with GPBlog.

What happened in FP1?

It was a quiet practice session until the final two minutes, when Bortoleto lost the rear of his car at Turn 18 and crashed, bringing out the red flag and ending the session early.
Mclaren came out on top, with Piastri setting the fastest lap at 1:16.545 of the session and Norris following closely behind, followed by Sainz.
Leclerc returned to the circuit today after missing out yesterday due to feeling ill, however he experienced an unwanted distraction as he complained about a unique issue involving his helmet lifting whilst on track.
Verstappen also felt some frustration with his car during this session, a disappointing session for the Dutchman as he took P7.
Lewis Hamilton took P5, closely behind his old teammate Russel who secured P4.

Championship standings

McLaren come into the weekend in strong form as it is possible that Piastri could achieve his fourth win in a row this weekend, extending his 16 point lead over teammate Norris in this intense papaya battle for the championship.
Ferrari could show promising pace this weekend at their home race in Imola, especially with recent upgrades and strong crowd support behind them.
However, Mercedes have looked increasingly competitive over the past few races, steadily closing the gap to the front. Teenage sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli will also be eager to make an impression in front of his home fans, adding extra motivation for the Silver Arrows.
Max Verstappen remains very much in contention as well, with the reigning world champion having a strong track record at Imola.
