What happened in FP1?
For the first time this year, it was
Max Verstappen who was the quickest driver during the first session of the weekend. The Dutchman's lap time was a 1:13.193 on the soft tyres.
Still, he has to remain careful, as after the three penalty points he received for his collision with George Russell
Behind the Red Bull driver, the two Williams rounded off the Top 3, in the order of Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz.
Behind the Groves-based team's cars, former teammates Russell and Lewis Hamilton finished in P4 and P5 respectively.
The seven-time world champion also had an incident with Verstappen, but was not investigated by the stewards.
Charles Leclerc also made the headlines, as after 15 minutes, he locked up into Turn 3, and collided with the wall. Over the radio, he said:
"**** sorry. I'm in the wall. Yeam my bad, I should've gone straight. I thought I will just make it, but I clipped the wall." Difficult FP1 for McLaren
On the other hand, fans did not get to see the two McLarens being towards the front on the timesheet during the first session of this Friday, as Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri finished in P7 and P14 respectively. The Briton was approximately half a second behind Verstappen, while Piastri's gap was a second.
Norris especially seemed to struggle for grip, as he lost control over his MCL39 on multiple occasions in the hairpin, and also cut Turn 2 and Turn 7.
FP2 will begin at 22:00 BST (17:00 local time), and will last one hour as per usual.
