It may be Lando Norris' first pole of the 2023 season, but the young British driver still believed more time could have been found in his papaya-coloured McLaren.
However, Norris found enough time to snatch the Sprint Shootout pole away from Max Verstappen in P2, beating out the Dutchman by just 0.061 seconds to start P1 in the Sprint Race later on today.

Norris takes Shootout P1 but must wait for the stewards' decision

Speaking to Naomi Schiff after taking a fantastic first place, Norris said, "It was a good day today. I mean, honestly, it felt like one of the worst laps I've done, so I'm a little bit surprised, but it's a good surprise. I feel like I made up for yesterday. So, yeah, it is my first pole in a long time, so I'm happy."
However, Norris will have to hold his celebrations for a little while, as he has been summoned to the stewards for exceeding the maximum delta time in the first session of the Shootout.

But even if the Brit is demoted from his P1 place, he still believes his McLaren has the pace to do well in the race later in the day. "The pace has been good all weekend. The car has been very strong, so we're on the right track. But it's a tough one. The Red Bulls are always quick, and Max is always quick, so it's not going to be an easy race. But the pace is strong. If we're going to have any chance, I'll give it my all."
