How long will 2022 rules remain valid? ''From 2026, we can start over''

The new rules for the cars have been postponed for a year until 2022 and we will have to wait even longer for new engines in Formula 1. However, with the coronavirus spreading all over the world, this seems to be the best choice.

"It's a good thing we postponed the rules until 2022. Because of the coronavirus many plans have been postponed and with all the additional costs this is better now'', Mattia Binotto starts talking to Racefans.net. However, the question is until when these rules should apply. The current engine regulations expire at the end of 2025, so F1 can opt for a completely new concept from 2026 onwards.

Where Red Bull Racing might have ridden under the current rules for a bit longer, according to Binotto it's time to really switch to the new rules in 2022. ''We just have to work hard to have it ready at that time," says the Italian, where Christian Horner was still openly doubting whether this was feasible.

''The talks will take place soon, but little is clear about that at the moment. We know that the Concorde Agreement is fixed until 2025, so from 2026 we can do something new as a sport'', concludes Binotto, who will really be tested in 2022 as leader of Ferrari when his team has to present a car good enough for the world title under completely new rules.
