Officially, Lewis Hamilton is unemployed at the moment, as his contract expired with Mercedes in December. Agreement on a new deal is still pending. Based on rumours over the past week, negotiations appeared to be deadlocked but now progress seems to have been made.
"It is understood both parties have been in dialogue in recent weeks, and although discussions are progressing, a conclusion to the saga is not imminent," The Press Association reported on Thursday afternoon. The main sticking point at the moment would be the length of the new contract.

Mercedes remains patient

The season starts in just over two months, but the German racing team is not desperate (yet). "Mercedes are confident Hamilton, awarded a knighthood in the New Year Honours list, will extend his stay with the sport’s all-conquering team. But the length of his new contract is under scrutiny, with reports the record-breaking Briton has been offered only a one-year deal.”
The seven-time world champion himself is aiming for a multi-year contract, but Mercedes are not willing to accept that. As an alternative, Toto Wolff's team has the young talent George Russell.
