F1 Commission: sprint format may be shaken up, rules to build 2026 car

The fourth and final meeting of the F1 Commission took place today in Abu Dhabi. Several topics were discussed there and a number of important knots were made about next season, as well as the years that follow. Below is a summary of what was agreed.

Sprint races in 2024

The format of the sprint weekend will be looked at. Drivers and teams have been criticising this for some time. It is being investigated how the 'sprint-evens' can be further separated from the Grand Prix. In other words, it should become more separate. The first F1 Commission meeting of 2024 will discuss this further.
The locations of the sprint races, presumably six again, will be announced sometime in the coming weeks.

Not working on 2026 car yet

It has been agreed that teams will not be allowed to start developing the 2026 car until 2025. This is purely about designing the chassis and, therefore not the engine regulations. After all, engine manufacturers are already busy working on those.

Tyre blankets remain

Formula 1's idea was to start banning tyre blankets. The ban was already postponed once until 2025, but tyre blankets will remain allowed from 2025 as well. According to Formula 1 teams, it only creates more danger if drivers are sent out on cold tyres.

Other

- Work continues on the project to combat spray in rainy conditions.
- Drivers will have more cooling options while driving in high temperatures. Further research into this is ongoing.
