Analysis Chandhok: Only Mercedes customers do not lose time in qualification

Red Bull Racing had already admitted that it misses speed on one lap. Karun Chandhok grabbed the data from the qualifications of the first triple header and figured out who won or lost the most compared to 2019. Here are some striking results.

The losers

It won't come as a surprise that Mercedes is again by far the fastest during qualifying. The team ranked first on average in 2019 and will be in first place in 2020. In 2019 Mercedes was closely followed by Ferrari, which also took a pole position with Charles Leclerc in Bahrain and was only 0.138% behind Mercedes on average. That figure has now risen to 1.547%.

Red Bull is also losing a lot of time. In 2019 the team from Milton Keynes was on average 0.475% slower than Mercedes. After three races in 2020 the team is on average 1.382% slower than Mercedes.

Who does win?

What is perhaps most striking is that every non-Bass-driven team loses time compared to last season. The only two climbers are Racing Point and Williams, two teams that both drive a Mercedes.

(1/2 )Thought it's time to look at the Quali form guide after the first triple header of F1 2020. Interesting that Racing Point & Williams the only gainers, Ferrari powered teams gone backwards the most. RBR have openly admitted they need to do some work to unlock 1 lap pace.

(2/2) Hungary could be the only high drag, high downforce track this year without Monaco & Singapore so interesting to compare this year vs last year at this track. RP a big gain, Williams making a small gain while RBR & Ferrari powered teams taken a step backwards.
