Helmut Marko and Christian Horner are supposed to be in Austria right now where they met with the big boss of Red Bull Dietrich Mateschitz. Subject of the conversation would be the possibility to buy the Honda engine themselves which would allow them to drive the power unit after 2021.
Red Bull is in a hurry to find a new engine supplier now that Honda has announced they are going to leave the sport. The most logical options seem to be to buy an engine from Mercedes, Ferrari or Renault, but a fourth option is to continue with the Honda engine. Olav Mol also indicated this. The engine will then be used as a 'white label'.
Red Bull would then buy the Honda engine and the Austrians would look for a third party to take on the further development of the engine. According to MissedApex Podcast, Horner and Marko are currently with the big boss Mateschitz to discuss this option and for financial approval. From 2022 the Engine will no longer bear the name Honda but possibly the name of another sponsor.
Missed Apex understands that Horner and Marko are in Austria to meet with Mateschitz. the aim of the meeting is to get a sign off on the finance to buy the Honda engine IP
