Thailand, Malaysia, Rwanda, Nigeria, Morocco; just a few countries that are keen to host a Grand Prix. Portugal joins this list, where the president recently announced they are set to welcome the F1 circus from 2027. But is this realistic? Indeed, there are behind-the-scenes discussions with Portugal and the
Portimao circuit - where the Grand Prix is to be held - and
Formula 1. A proposal termed as positive is now on the table, but there is no definitive deal in sight. The reason for not sealing the deal is simple to explain.
The Formula 1 calendar currently has space for 24 Grands Prix (which could be increased to 25, ed.) and nearly all the races have long-term deals with Formula One Management (FOM). Only the future of the Grand Prix in Barcelona is highly uncertain - after all, the agreement expires after '26. Furthermore, the Dutch Grand Prix will disappear after next year.
Formula 1 wants to go to Africa
All in all, there isn't much room for new races. In addition, it should not be forgotten that FOM has been openly considering a Grand Prix in Africa. If that wish can be fulfilled, there would thus be potential room for two new races in 2027, one of which Portugal hopes to be.
Formula 1 has already been a guest in Portimao
The advantage for Portimao is that
F1 is familiar with the circuit (after all, it was used during the Covid-19 period), the facilities are already there and are perfectly fine, and - not completely unimportant - it is a European race. If Netherlands and Barcelona were to drop out, plus considering that the Belgian Grand Prix will be held every other year according to the new contract, Portugal sees they could fill a gap.
No guarantees from FOM
FOM has never guaranteed that the number of races in Europe will not decrease from what it is now, but the overarching organization also knows that the cradle of Formula 1 is on the European continent. That could very well work in Portugal's favour, as European fans could be catered to this way.
FOM is in no rush to make decisions. After all, the 2026 calendar is set and it is now looking for the best deals for '27. In the short term, no decision is likely to be expected.
