Luís Montenegro, the Prime Minister of Portugal, appears to have confirmed that Formula 1 will return to the Algarve, with the pinnacle of motorsport set to race at the Portimão Circuit in 2027. Montenegro noted that only official documentation is pending.
The circuit was completed in 2008. Formula 1 first visited Portimão in 2020, when the Portuguese Grand Prix was added to the calendar due to adjustments caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The race returned in 2021. Legendary drivers Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell have each won three times at the Portuguese track, while Lewis Hamilton claimed victory in both the 2020 and 2021 editions.

Portuguese Prime Minister speaks out on Algarve GP return

"One of the circumstances that contribute most to the promotion of this region are the major events,'' said the Portuguese Prime Minister at a festival.
''We have secured the organization of the MotoGP, the royal class of motorsports worldwide, for 2025 and 2026. And I can tell you that we have everything ready to officially make the return of Formula 1 to the Algarve in 2027.''
''These events require some financial effort from the government, but they produce both direct and indirect promotional revenues that, frankly, are worth it."
