The photos weren't entirely sharp, so the doubt about their authenticity was understandable. Finally, early on Wednesday evening, there was the definitive confirmation: Max Verstappen and Toto Wolff were spotted on the same boat in Italy during their vacation. This caused a landslide of theories on social media. Was this a sign that Verstappen is going to Mercedes; whether in 2026 or 2027?
The answer to that question is a simple 'no'. This was a friendly meet-up; nothing more, nothing less.
Although the impression is sometimes given that drivers and team bosses in
Formula 1 are at war with each other, the reality in the
F1 paddock is completely different. Boring, might be the better word.
This is what happens in the F1 paddock
If you've never walked in the heart of Formula 1, it's hard to imagine. But the F1 paddock is a small community where everyone talks to each other, pats each other on the back affably, and stops by each other's place.
Contrary to what outsiders might think, it is the most friendly environment imaginable.
Of course, on the circuit, the teams and their drivers are fierce competitors. But off-track, everyone knows everyone, and friendliness is the rule.
Toto Wolff and the Verstappen family also have such a relationship: hard on the track, but outside they talk regularly - about the kids, vacations, and whatever else anyone talks about.
Why is this photo newsworthy in this case? It's naturally related to the recent months where Verstappen and Wolff discussed a possible switch by the four-time world champion to Mercedes.
Wolff and Verstappen understand the game
If then - after Verstappen already announced that he will be staying with Red Bull Racing in '26 - photos emerge, the whole world jumps on it. Verstappen and Wolff understand this better than anyone.
As far as it's known, they have no problem at all that their meeting during the holiday was recorded.
There is nothing to hide; it was a delightful gathering and this certainly happens more often - usually out of sight of the cameras.
You might almost forget. Toto Wolff and Max Verstappen are also 'normal' people.
