George Russell has not been penalised for an incident with teammate Lewis Hamilton during qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. The Mercedes drivers hit each other after Russell swerved out of the way of Carlos Sainz's Ferrari but failed to notice Hamilton driving behind him.

No penalty for Russell after collision with Hamilton

A bizarre moment occurred in the closing stages of Q2, with the Mercedes drivers hitting each other. Hamilton's W14 did not escape unscathed, but the 38-year-old Briton was able to continue into Q3. Russell was stranded in Q2, however, and did not advance to the top ten battle.
After qualifying, both drivers had to report to the stewards to tell their side of the story. Russell explained that he had just started his fast lap but had not looked carefully in his mirrors and that his team had not informed him about the oncoming Hamilton, who was also starting a fast lap.
Russell deviated from Carlos Sainz, who had just finished his fast lap. The stewards found this sufficient reason to give the Mercedes driver an official warning, but otherwise not apply a penalty.
