Mercedes immediately took control at the front in Malaysia after a superb start, with Kimi Antonelli grabbing the lead ahead of George Russell, while Max Verstappen dropped to third place.
The frontrunners opted for different strategies at the start, with both Mercedes drivers and Verstappen choosing intermediate tyres. Ferrari, meanwhile, sent both cars out on softs, a decision that saw them lose a huge number of positions, with both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc currently outside the top 10.
Charles Leclerc also ran into trouble after sustaining front-wing damage, forcing him to pit for a replacement. A few laps later, Verstappen made his move, sweeping past Russell with no chance for the Mercedes driver to respond before setting off in pursuit of race leader Antonelli.
