Kimi Antonelli has topped the timing charts in the first practice session at the Austria GP, ahead of George Russell and Oscar Piastri. Antonelli's lap time of 1:07.796 was enough to edge out teammate Russell at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg.
The session got off to a dramatic start as Max Verstappen stopped on the pit lane and had to be wheeled back to the garage, with the Dutchman saying over team radio: "Every time I release the clutch I get anti-stall."
Twenty minutes into the session, Verstappen was finally out on track, but not after a second failed attempt. His Red Bull teammate Isack Hadjar also suffered problems, only emerging with 25 minutes to go, while Lando Norris saw his FP1 start significantly delayed due to a hydraulic leak.
As for the on-track action, Antonelli and Russell traded top spot for the first half of the session, with Verstappen impressing to go P3 on his very first lap in a much-upgraded RB22.
Just over halfway, the Mercedes cars then went onto the soft tyres, going a second ahead of Verstappen, with Antonelli just over a tenth ahead of his teammate Russell, who later closed the gap to just 0.040s before the session's end.

The session was ultimately brought to an end with a very late Red Flag, with Cadillac's Sergio Perez stopping on track on the way to Turn 3. Marshalls had to put blocks under the Cadillac to prevent it rolling down the hill, with drivers missing out on the chance to do practice starts.

In fourth came Verstappen, ahead of Lewis Hamilton and Arvid Lindblad in P5 and P6, respectively.
Norris and Franco Colapinto made up seventh and eighth, while the top ten at FP1 was rounded up by Ferrari academy driver Dino Beganovic and Ollie Bearman.
