The first and only free practice session of the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort has just come to an end, giving the teams their sole opportunity to fine-tune their set-ups ahead of Sprint Qualifying later this afternoon. Here is the full recap of the session. How did FP1 unfold at Zandvoort?
The opening session took place
on a wet track for the first ten minutes following rain earlier in the morning, with temperatures at Zandvoort also unusually cool for the summer. The drivers therefore had the opportunity to get to grips with the circuit on intermediate tyres before switching to slicks later in the session.
With 45 minutes remaining, the drivers began to push harder, with Lewis Hamilton setting the fastest time with a 1:15.124, two tenths clear of Kimi Antonelli and three tenths ahead of George Russell.
Carlos Sainz, meanwhile, ran into trouble after losing control of his car at the final corner and ending up in the gravel. Fortunately, the Spaniard managed to avoid the barriers and was able to rejoin the track before returning to the pits.
Local hero
Max Verstappen began to show his pace with around 30 minutes remaining, setting the fourth-fastest time at that stage despite running on hard tyres, while the drivers ahead of him had all set their best laps on mediums.
A scare for Kimi Antonelli, as the championship leader spun on his own after moving off the racing line to let another car through and losing control under acceleration. However, he too escaped without any consequences.
Ferrari's strong form continued with Charles Leclerc, who moved to the top of the timesheets with a 1:14.146, one tenth clear of his teammate to complete a Ferrari one-two with just under half an hour remaining. Hamilton also had a trip through the gravel while completing a race simulation, but he was able to rejoin the track without any issues.
The final ten minutes saw the drivers complete their true qualifying simulations, with Lewis Hamilton setting the outright fastest time on soft tyres with a 1:13.139, two tenths clear of his teammate, while Oscar Piastri finished almost half a second adrift.
In the closing stages, reigning world champion Lando Norris moved to the top of the timesheets with a 1:13.106, just 34 thousandths of a second ahead of Hamilton. Antonelli ultimately had the final say, taking the fastest time with a 1:12.949. He was the only driver to break into the 1:12s, stealing the spotlight by finishing a tenth and a half clear of Norris and almost two tenths ahead of Hamilton. Below are the full results.
