Mercedes boss Toto Wolff still believes Mercedes don’t have the pace they need despite being on for a 1-2 towards the end of the race. Lewis Hamilton managed to win his first race of the season, but Bottas retired with a puncture.
Mercedes now lead both the constructors and the drivers' championship. However, the Italian teams continue to breathe strongly down their necks.
“I think the feeling that prevails all of us is that we didn't have the pace through the weekend that we need to have,” admitted Toto.
“From his (Lewis) perspective, he very much knows what’s right and wrong. It was Valtteri’s race to win. But then I think he just got his Melbourne victory back.”
The Silver Arrows boss went on to explain the two reasons why the feeling in the garage still isn’t right after the first four races.
“The first reason is that we lacked the pace and the second reason is that the quickest guy on the track didn’t finish with a puncture that was caused by debris.”
It’s clear that Mercedes are still feeling worried about the pace of the Ferrari. In Spain, Mercedes will struggle to find speed again because of the nature of the track. Ferrari will be favourites.
