Wolff on Antonelli and Russell battle: 'We only half enjoyed it'

Toto Wolff experienced a day full of mixed feelings in Montreal. Mercedes won the Canadian Grand Prix with Kimi Antonelli, but George Russell could not finish the race. Before that, the two teammates had another hard-fought battle. The team boss was candid about how he experienced it from the pit wall.
For Wolff, an internal duel is a double-edged sword, and that feeling is anything but new at Mercedes. The Austrian described the situation afterwards as he felt it: happy for the winner, but disappointed for the loser. "As a team we have had so many situations where it is bittersweet. You are extremely happy for one driver but gutted for the other one.
"We half enjoyed watching how they fought it out. Every time we thought about saying, 'we have had enough for the moment', the next two laps were fast again."

Mercedes wanted to intervene between Russell and Antonelli

Antonelli drove a strong race and, according to his own team boss, fully deserved the win. For Russell, however, it was a bitter afternoon: the Briton was leading when he retired, and with that, a potentially iconic teammate duel was lost. "Kimi has done a splendid job today and deserved to win. It was a shame for George as he was leading."

Wolff admitted that Mercedes was closely monitoring the fight and was prepared to step in if the situation required it. The decisive factor was the gap to the chasers: as long as it was large enough, the Austrian let his drivers go at it. "As long as we maintained that gap, it was okay watching it, but it can obviously go wrong. If it was closer behind us, we would jump in."
It's an honest glimpse into the real-time decision making of a team boss: racing enjoyment versus strategic risk. This time the damage was limited — though it hardly felt that way for Russell, and therefore for Wolff as well.
