Lewis Hamilton had some contact with Kevin Magnussen through the opening sequence of corners. The seven-time World Champion had a puncture and had to pit, dropping to the back of the grid. Hamilton even asked the team if it's best to retire and save the engine, but Toto Wolff believes Hamilton could've won the Spanish Grand Prix.

Stronger Mercedes

Mercedes have been battling with porpoising since the start of pre-season, but the car looked much stronger in Spain. George Russell was even able to fight with Max Verstappen for a number of laps, though the world championship leader had a broken DRS. Still, Wolff is very pleased with the pace Mercedes demonstrated.
"It's always the call when you basically lost the race. Decide the benefit of continuing. As a driver, you're thinking 'it can't be possible, I'm 50 seconds behind the leaders'. Still valuable mileage, his race pace was stunning. Would've raced for the win," Wolff gave his reaction to Hamilton's radio message towards the start of the race.
In his conversation with Sky Sports, Wolff wanted to dish out the praise to Russell for his efforts in the fight with Verstappen. He insists he has the right two drivers after a long debate with Valtteri Bottas.

"Defence was unbelievable. How he positioned the car. I am really happy to see him racing like this. We have two unbelievable drivers, we have the right guys to sort our car out and come back to the front. I heard there was some moaning in the background, but this is what we need," Wolff added.
