Toto Wolff highlighted George Russell’s brilliant victory in Singapore, drawing a comparison with the mistake he made two years ago. “If you would have told me that we’re dominating in the way we did today, I would have not believed it.
- Toto WolffWolff admitted that, ahead of the weekend, he never expected such a dominant performance from Mercedes and Russell, given that the W16 has historically struggled in very hot conditions.
“That (Singapore) was never a nice place for us in terms of car performance. Obviously a great place other than driving.
If you would have told me that we’re dominating in the way we did today, I would have not believed it. But from the get-go, on both tyres, driver and car were just in sync and not to be beaten.”

When it came to Russell’s performance, the Austrian pointed out that while he used to make the odd mistake in the past, that’s no longer the case this year — a sign of the significant step forward he has made in terms of maturity.
“I think we’ve seen George in the past, these moments, but not recently. That’s a step-up that he has made also this year — that these things don’t happen again.
He was in control of the race today, eking out an advantage, managing it when Max was a bit closer. And there was not at any moment a doubt that there was any risk in his driving.”
British media applaud Russell’s flawless performance in Singapore GP
The Mercedes driver’s perfect weekend
naturally drew plenty of attention from the British media, who could do nothing but praise his stunning victory under the lights of Marina Bay.
Russell’s triumph began on Saturday, when he delivered a flawless pole lap — breaking the track record twice in the process.
In the race, despite the looming threat of Max Verstappen, who started on soft tyres, the Brit was never truly under pressure, controlling proceedings from start to finish and crossing the line in dominant fashion to claim his second win of the season.
