Johnny Herbert doesn't see Max Verstappen becoming champion this year, but predicts a key role for the Dutchman in the battle between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
We are exactly halfway through the 2025 Formula 1 season after twelve race weekends. Although Verstappen continues to maximize his results despite numerous issues with the RB21, it’s clear to most that fighting for the world championship this year will be a significant challenge.

Red Bull Racing wants to make progress with updates
The battle for the title now appears to be between the two McLaren drivers. While it’s often said that you should never truly write off Verstappen and Red Bull, even Johnny Herbert — who holds Verstappen in high regard — admits that this time might be different.
“For the championship, yes,” said the former driver on F1.com when asked if Verstappen was out of the title fight.

Will Verstappen Cause Trouble for McLaren?

That doesn't mean Verstappen will be invisible for the remainder of the season.
“He will get involved in the fight, he will cause problems for the others, and he will have influence — because he may take points away from the others,” Herbert explained. “He’ll enjoy that too: ‘I’m still here, I’m still here.’”
As for the title itself?
It is highly unlikely…” the Brit admitted. “There could be an implosion at McLaren, but I don’t think so.”

McLaren Under Pressure From Verstappen

According to the 61-year-old, Verstappen will still insert himself into the title narrative — not as a contender, but as a disruptor. His presence alone could be enough to create pressure within McLaren.
“He will make them think in a slightly different way,” said Herbert. “They’re fighting for the championship while also having to deal with Max.”
