It was far from the ideal race for Max Verstappen, despite starting from pole at the British Grand Prix. After a chaotic afternoon that included a spin and a general lack of pace, he had to settle for fifth place.
Max Verstappen has already ruled out any hopes of fighting for the championship this season—he’s no longer focused on that. What he does want, however, is to get the most out of every race. But with P5 at Silverstone, even that goal slipped out of reach.
"Ultimately, with the restart and the spin, I was stuck in traffic", he reacted after the race at Viaplay. Yet, that was not the only problem the Dutchman encountered in his race. Is the Red Bull just not fast enough to contend at the front anymore?

Verstappen as fast as midfield teams

"I was also in traffic, but also did not have the speed myself. That's obviously not good. With the wing, the low grip... we were pretty bad actually", the reigning world champion continues.
Whether it was just the setup, or a long-term problem at Red Bull? First, he looks back at where it went wrong, his spin: "I just stepped on the gas and... gone"
"I just did not have the speed like the guys in front of me, until everyone went through their tyres. But even then, the balance was not really good", he pointed out referring to the problems at Red Bull.
Thanks to a solid strategy in the final stages, Verstappen managed to fight his way back up to fifth place, limiting the damage in the drivers’ championship—even if the two McLarens now seem out of reach.
