'Verstappen era may well be over after just two titles'

David Coulthard enjoyed the way Max Verstappen dominated Formula 1 this season. However, the Briton did not rule out the Dutchman taking his last world title, pointing to Fernando Alonso's career in an interview with Formule1.nl.

Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton both still hold the record with seven world championships won. Verstappen, with his two world titles, seems to be on his way to also having an era of his own, but according to Coulthard, that is far from certain.

"The Verstappen era may well be over after just two titles," the former Formula 1 driver in fact revealed to the outlet. "Not because he is not a brilliant driver, but it could just be that he does not have a title-winning car in the coming seasons."

Coulthard sees in Alonso the perfect example. The Spaniard took the world title in both 2005 and 2006, after which expectations were high. After his second win of the season, however, he was left empty-handed. According to Coulthard, Verstappen therefore needs the luck that Red Bull Racing's car continues to give him the ability to fight for wins. "Nobody knows that beforehand," he said.
