Former Formula 1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne made his Le Mans debut, and his first experience has given him the hunger to return and win. The Belgian driver finished third in his first race for the SMP Racing team.
Also in his team were the slightly more experienced Vitaly Petrov and Mikhail Aleshin. Out of the three Vandoorne drove for nine hours, the highest total in the team.
“The first experience was fantastic. It was very exciting between us and the Rebellions, I think they were slightly faster even at certain points. But we were able to make a difference when it was needed," Vandoorne said to GPUpdate.net.
Many of the cars picked up mechanical issues during the 24 hours, but the SMP car wasn't troubled too much. “Our main goal was to stay out of trouble and not make mistakes. I think we did that too. It was a very difficult race, but we had a good pace and some nice duels on the circuit. ”
“I am very happy with my first time at Le Mans. I want to thank Boris Rotenberg and SMP for finally participating in the WEC. The engineers, engineers and Vitaly and Mikhail have warmly welcomed me within the team."

But for Vandoorne, he has goals bigger than his third-place finish.
"I would like to come back and try to win."
