Yuki Tsunoda was promoted into Formula 1 last year through the Red Bull Junior Program, but the AlphaTauri driver is also considered a Honda driver because he has been supported by the Japanese company for years.
From 2022, Tsunoda will have to do without Honda, as the brand officially stepped out of Formula 1 at the end of last season. However, Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri can still expect support from Honda, as the Japanese company will help them develop their engine in the upcoming season.
Throughout his career, Tsunoda has had a lot of support from Honda, as he has been supported by the Honda Formula Dream program since 2016. In 2018, the 21-year-old became champion in the Japanese Formula 4 Championship. He then became the first Japanese driver in Formula 1 since 2014 when he made his debut last year.

Tsunoda owes a lot to Honda

"It’s been so important to have had Honda’s backing throughout my career so far. I have had many opportunities I wouldn’t have had without Honda and I have learnt so much. I owe them a lot and together with Red Bull, they are an integral part of my development as a driver. I will give my best to reward them with a good performance. I will be missing some of the people we used to work with but I’m sure we’ll be able to benefit from the same reliable and powerful PU we had last year", he said in an official AlphaTauri press release.
