Lance stroll suggests he shouldn’t be considered as
Williams number one driver going into the 2018 F1 season. Stroll, entering his 2nd season in
Formula 1 was expected to be promoted to number one driver following the retirement of last seasons team-mate Felipe Massa.
This retirement has made room for Sergey Sirotkin who will make his F1 debut in Australia. A lot of fans were surprised to see Sirotkin selected over experienced Robert Kubica.
Stroll said: “Lead the team is maybe the wrong word. I have a year under my belt compared to Sergey, but at the same time, we’re all in it together. There’s not a lead driver and a second driver, it's one team and we want to get the most out of the package that’s available.”
The Canadian went on to say: “My job remains the same, regardless of who is on the other side of the garage. I have a group of people I work with and we want to get the most out of our package. Our meetings are the same, everything is the same. Of course, we don't have the most experienced line up but there are some good people around us. There is a lot of experience around the engineering table in order to help us out. So I believe we have a good team in place going into the season.”
Stroll managed to get on to the podium last season following early season criticism. Lance won the F3 European Championship in 2016 inspiring his call up to F1. Stroll’s Russian team mate aged 22 is slightly more experienced. Sirotkin finished 20th in the Formula 2 Championship last season only scoring 9 points. The winner of this championship, Leclerc, also received a promotion to F1
