George Russell has managed to hold the lead at the start of the race, with Max Verstappen in hot pursuit and a papaya kerfuffle resulting in contact between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Russell got off the line the best and held the lead into Turn 1. Max couldn't make the soft tyre work to attack the British Mercedes driver, but it was enough to protect his P2 from Oscar Piastri.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli dropped back, with Norris jumping the Italian and lining up on the inside next to Piastri and wrestling his way past the Australian driver, albeit with minor contact.

Said minor contact has prompted Piastri to ask for team orders to force Norris to yield the position back, since the move was not in line with what he believes are McLaren's racing principles, as he said on the onboard radio. "So are we cool with Lando just barging me out of the way or? What’s the go there?," Piastri said.
The response from the McLaren pitwall of reviewing it after the race, did not satisfy Piastri, who then accused Norris of poor driving.
“That's not fair. I'm sorry, that's not fair. "If he has to avoid another car by crashing into his team-mate, then that's a pretty **** job of avoiding."
