Last year, George Russell took his first pole position of his Formula 1 career at the Hungaroring. Expectations are for him to not repeat this trick, as Max Verstappen and his Red Bull seem to be the fastest on any track in any condition. However, this does not mean that this does not make the Briton dream of another pole in Hungary.
Russell was already close to pole position in Belgium in 2021. In the Williams, he managed to beat current teammate Lewis Hamilton, among others. Only the eventual champion of that season stayed ahead of the Briton. In 2022, the Mercedes driver did take his first pole position against the odds. After problems with Verstappen's car and a Q2 elimination of Sergio Perez, Russell managed to keep the Ferraris behind.

Russell wants to go for pole position again

So this weekend, for now, it does not look like Mercedes could go for pole, but Russell is not ruling it out, he says during the press conference: "I'll be pushing for it for sure. I'm looking forward to seeing what the weekend's going to hold. It's been an interesting few races with our performance in Austria, then really quite strong in Silverstone. We're still battling forward and still really focused to keep on progressing. We're in a good position, but we need to try and stay ahead of our competitors."
