The British driver had bags of raw speed over the weekend, qualifying fourth in dry conditions, but only scored a point in the race.
Russell's home race was a chaotic event in mixed conditions and being on the right tyre to match the weather was critical.
Mercedes were very brave with their calls and pitted for slicks at the end of the formation lap, which didn't work out.
The German team also chose to put hard tyres on Russells car in the closing stages of the race as the track was drying.
This was an odd decision, as there was very little grip on the circuit, and the hard tyre takes the longest in the range to warm up.
After stuttering to 10th place at the chequered flag, Russell explained that, as Mercedes didn't have the quickest car, they needed to perfect every decision.
"You don't need to gamble" if your car is quick
After the British Grand Prix, he told GPblog among others: "At the end of the day, if you have a fast car, you don't need to gamble because you made the wrong strategy choice, you'll still come back and probably win the race. When you don't have the pace, every small wrong decision, you pay the price.
"We played it safe, maybe today we finished P4. It doesn't really excite me so much. Of course, now standing here, I wish I'd finished fourth, but it could have easily gone a different way."
Russell has only finished outside the points once which came in an 11th place finish at Monaco.
The British driver is
spearheading Mercedes' charge in the Constructors' Championship as they battle Ferrari for second place. The Italians hold a slim advantage with just 12 points separating the teams.
