The Frenchman began the race in P5 after an impressive qualifying and Lewis Hamilton’s grid penalty and turned that into a deserved 12 points on Sunday.
Toro Rosso are using
Honda engines for the first season, switching from Renault during the winter.
McLaren endured three difficult years with Honda power units, suffering several engine problems, but things have been much more positive for Toro Rosso, and Red Bull driver
Daniel Ricciardo has been impressed.
“I mean, it’s helping their chances of looking attractive to Red Bull,” the Australian said. “But those engine discussions, you know, don’t involve us drivers but I’m aware there could be some changes next year.
“They obviously invested quite a bit in the last few years with McLaren and it didn’t quite work out. But pretty cool now Toro Rosso is doing well with it.”
There has been widespread speculation that Red Bull may follow their feeder team and take on the Honda engines for 2019, especially as relationships with long-term supplier Renault have appeared to be strained in recent seasons.
