Sergio Perez had kind words for Franco Colapinto, who returned to Formula 1 this year with Alpine, but also warned him about the potential challenges that may lie ahead. After showing flashes of promise last year with Williams—albeit alongside a fair share of crashes—Franco Colapinto has been given a second chance this season, replacing a disappointing Jack Doohan, who never truly managed to impress Flavio Briatore.
The Argentine driver hasn’t exactly shone so far either, but at least he seems to have the backing of Sergio Perez, who left Formula 1 last year but is the subject of persistent rumors about a possible comeback to the grid in 2026.
"I think Franco is doing really well," Sergio Perez commented in a conversation with Ivan Moreira on TikTok.

However, the Mexican immediately gave a warning to the Argentine: "He has a great future, but in Formula 1 you have to take it step by step, because the road is long."
That Colapinto realizes this himself is something Perez has no doubts about. "I am sure he is making good steps in his career," said the former Red Bull Racing driver.
Alpine gave Colapinto the opportunity to replace Jack Doohan for five Grand Prix's. The last Grand Prix of this package is the upcoming race in Austria. Afterwards, the French team is expected to make a decision again, although Briatore set the record straight about the recent rumors swinging on Colapinto's future

Sergio Perez also appears to be considering a return to the big leagues.
GPblog outlined his options, with a seat at Cadillac looking like the most realistic choice, though there remain (slim) chances for him with Alpine and Mercedes. The silly season is just around the corner, and the Mexican driver is set to be one of the main players.
