Palmer: "Dynamic between Verstappen and Perez is quite bizarre"

Jolyon Palmer watched the United States Grand Prix unfold with amazement. He particularly mentioned the dynamic between Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, which he said he found 'bizarre'.

Verstappen took an active part in determining Red Bull Racing's strategy in Austin by suggesting that the team should bring Pérez in earlier than planned. "He read the race very well," Palmer wrote in his column for Formula1.com.

"He knew he was virtually leading the race because Hamilton couldn't go in immediately after him. He knew what had to happen then and therefore suggested that Red Bull should bring Pérez in. It is rather unusual that a driver dictates the strategy of his team mate," he continues.

The fact that Pérez is sacrificed every now and then to help Verstappen does, according to Palmer, ensure that the relationships within the team are very clear. "When you are the first driver to make this kind of suggestion, the dynamic is quite bizarre," Palmer said.
