On this day in 2004, Michael Schumacher won the Spanish Grand Prix, equalling Nigel Mansell's record for the best start to the season.
Schumacher's win was his 5th of the season, on his 200th Grand Prix start, equalling Mansell's start to the 1992 season. So sure were bookmakers after the end that Schumacher would take his fifth successive title, some started paying out on bets. What made Schumacher's win all the more remarkable was that for much of the race his Ferrari had a cracked exhaust.
Rubens Barrichello came second to complete a Ferrari 1-2, with Jarno Trulli finishing third ahead of Renault teammate Fernando Alonso.
Jenson Button finished eighth despite having eye problems caused by a tiny piece of carbon from another car becoming lodged in it.
