Ocon surprised: ''I'd be very happy if Alonso returns to Renault''

Daniel Ricciardo leaves Renault at the end of 2020, leaving a gap at the French race stable. Esteban Ocon is now the second driver and so the question is whether a new leader is needed?

Ocon has over two years of experience in Formula 1. He started half a season at Manor and then drove for Force India/Racing Point for two years. Ocon eventually had to make way for Lance Stroll, but after a year in the garage at Mercedes he is back on the grid. However, the question is whether he can already lead the team?

Ocon is French and a great talent, but with his Mercedes tyres, Renault would think about bringing back Fernando Alonso. ''My opinion will not determine if he comes, but I have a good relationship with him. I once swapped my helmet once and that was with him. If he returns I would be very happy with that'', says Ocon to Motorsport.com.

Whether Alonso will actually come to Renault remains to be seen. The Spaniard seems to want to return to Formula 1, but has always said he will only return with the chance of a world title. This doesn't seem to be an issue at Renault yet, but maybe Cyril Abiteboul will be able to seduce Alonso to sign a contract with Renault after Daniel Ricciardo.
