Newey issues warning to Formula 1: 'That's the problem'

Adrian Newey once again managed to build a high-performance car with Red Bull Racing this season. However, this was not easy, he stressed in conversation with Motorsport-magazin.com. This is because the team faced the challenges of the budget ceiling.
In an attempt by Formula 1 to cut costs significantly, teams are subject to a maximum amount that can be spent. It means that, even more than before, the teams have to figure out carefully what investments they want to spend money on.
Newey personally questions whether the current path of the motorsport class is the right one. According to Red Bull's top team, keeping the spending of the teams under control is good, but it is unclear whether the current regulations achieve this goal.
"It is difficult for everyone," Newey stressed. "I completely agree that Formula 1 needs to avoid a constant arms race and reduce costs. Whether you achieve this mainly with a cost cap - which is Formula 1's way - or by using other means is very controversial."

The Brit thinks it is quite possible that with takeovers at teams, sums of money will still remain unknown. "The problem is that we all have huge fixed costs. So what's left over you can put into research and development. If you look at it that way, those last few percent make a big difference."
