George Russell was set to start second on the grid. He would have been sandwiched in between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Due to a 1 place penalty incurred by Verstappen, Russell will now start on pole.
Mercedes may not be coming down from their high anytime soon as George Russell was appointed pole position after Max Verstappen received a one-place penalty. As Russell starts from P1, he may be able to recreate his Las Vegas victory. Luckily for him, he has faith in Mercedes.

Russell expects Qatar to work in his favour

Before he was even starting on pole, Russell was hoping for a good race. At the qualifying press conference, Russell was asked about the consistency of Mercedes. Mercedes dominated last weekend and now with Russell on pole, they are hoping for the same. Russell replied, "These last two races, the circuits have played in our favour. We know when we can get the car low and stiff on a smooth track, it works pretty well".
Even though they didn't have the best weekend in Brazil, the Mercedes drivers still felt as if they had done a great job. "Brazil, we didn't actually have the pace. We were very slow in the sprint, in sprint qualifying, but of course, it was a wet qualifying on the Sunday morning, so that evened things out a little bit. So I think we flattered ourselves a bit in Brazil".

He concluded,"These last two races, when we really analyze it, I don't think it's a surprise the car is performing as well as it has shown."
