New FIA president spoke to Wolff: "Then he started cooling down"

A few days after the decisive race in Abu Dhabi, which saw Max Verstappen become world champion, the FIA elected its new president. The organisation chose former rally driver Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who immediately had to deal with an angry Toto Wolff.

The 60-year-old Ben Sulayem states that in such a situation, there will always be someone disappointed. "Someone will always get upset," he says in conversation with the BBC. The new FIA president called Wolff prior to the FIA gala, but the Mercedes team boss informed him he would not be attending.

"I listened to him and then he started cooling down," he continued. He assured the team boss that the rules will be looked at to find any areas for improvement.

Despite Mercedes' vehement reaction to the final race in Abu Dhabi, and Wolff's claim that Hamilton would consider quitting as a Formula One driver, the 14-time Middle East rally champion is confident that the team can start with a clean slate in 2022.
