Things seem to be going for Aston Martin: at the season opener in Bahrain, Fernando Alonso finished third with a lightning-fast car and impressive overtaking. They are now seen as serious contenders for multiple podiums and a threat to the top teams.
Ferrari and Mercedes both have to deal with internal problems: Ferrari are already facing technical defects, and Mercedes are struggling with their team dynamics. Suddenly having to lose after years of winning brings friction. So Aston Martin is not experiencing serious opposition from them (yet).

Don't cheer too soon

The only one against whom Aston Martin can currently race is the ironclad Red Bull. Even against Red Bull, the British team has an advantage: it has the most wind tunnel time relative to all three top teams. So, with such development opportunities, everything, so far, seems to be looking positive.
"We have a good base," states team boss Mike Krack at Auto, Motor und Sport. "But we have to keep both feet on the ground. The gap to Red Bull was considerably big [in Bahrain]. We also don't know to what extent they controlled the race from the start."

So one should not cheer just yet. It is a matter of waiting to see whether Aston Martin can hold its own and start gaining time against Red Bull and whether the other two top teams can recover. The season is still long...
