Mexican Grand Prix still up in the air

The head of Mexico’s National Commission for Physical Culture and Sports has fiercely denied reports that she had said that the Mexican Grand Prix was the result of bribery and corruption.

There had been reports by Mexican newspapers that the Grand Prix was set to be scrapped as part of the new President Andes Manuel Lopez Obrador fresh regime.

Ana Gabriela Guevara was quoted last week by France’s AutoHebdo as saying: "A lot of bribes were paid to bring this event to the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez."

But Guevara has since denied the claims revealing: “I do not know who wrote those words and who put them out there.

Since the former athlete refuted the claims reports at RACER have shown AutoHebdo have admitted their mistake.

The new Mexican government has indicated that it will not continue supporting the event at the same level but race organisers will hold talks to discuss the future of the race.

“We are very proud of what we have achieved since the Mexican Grand Prix returned to the Formula 1 calendar in 2015," a statement from the promoters read.
