Red Bull Racing driver, who recently confirmed he will race with the No. 3 in the 2026 campaign, revealed during his media session at the team’s livery launch, attended by
GPblog, that a light-hearted exchange helped him acquire the number made famous by his former teammate.
“A few drinks together, yeah, that always helps,” The Dutch driver said in a light-hearted response to CBS News.
Verstappen had to change his race number after the number 1 went to the 2025 Drivers’ Championship, Lando Norris. The 28-year-old, who dominated the sport with four consecutive titles between 2021 and 2024, had previously teased alternatives, including the number 69. Ultimately, he opted for No. 3, taking over the number long associated with Ricciardo.

Verstappen explains reason for choosing No.3
In a recent interview with Viaplay, Verstappen explained that No. 3 has always been his personal favourite. He also reflected on the No. 33 he used before claiming his maiden world title, explaining why a single ‘3’ feels more fitting.
"It won't be number 33. My favourite number has always been three, apart from number one. We can now swap, so it'll be number 3. Number 33 was always fine, but I just like one 3 better than two. I always said it represented double luck, but I've already had my luck in Formula 1." Verstappen’s choice of No. 3 sees him follow in the
footsteps of several greats who have graced Formula 1, including Michael Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton, and Fernando Alonso.
