Max Verstappen insists his podium this weekend was a huge positive that his team needed after a tricky run of races. He believed the car wasn't suited to the Montreal track making it all the sweeter for the Dutchman.
Despite facing plenty of negative attention, it’s Verstappen’s 2nd podium of the year equalling team-mate Daniel Ricciardo’s total. Prior to the weekend, he threatened to head-butt anyone who mentioned his crashes.
“The whole weekend we were very competitive and in the race, with the tyres we had, I think we maximised our strategy, and we were very happy with the result,” said Verstappen.
“Every single weekend you go in you try to win and here practice has been good, qualifying has been positive and the race went well too. Of course, we’re pleased with that, and to come away with a podium - is really positive.”
Verstappen is now well clear of his closest challenger in the drivers’ championship against Fernando Alonso. He’s just 18 points shy of Kimi Raikkonen and believes yesterday’s race can spring him back up.
“I don’t think we can challenge for victories on every track, it just depends on how long the straights are but for now, I am looking forward to the upcoming races,” added the 20-year-old Dutchman in an interview on Motorsport week.
