Helmut Marko revealed that Honda's updated engine was three-tenths of a second quicker when using the engine in Canada.
Rumours continue to grow over Red Bull and Renault's engine partnership and team consultant, Marko added to the rumours after confirming his delight with Honda's engine upgrade.
Auto Bild say that Red Bull chiefs are thrilled with the improvement that Honda is making with their Toro Rosso junior team.
"We're talking about three-tenths faster lap times," Marko said following Verstappen and Ricciardo's third and fourth place finish respectively.
Renault also made some progress in Canada with Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz Jr. finishing seventh and eighth.

Renault's chief Cyril Abiteboul expressed his desire to have a decision on the engine from Red Bull and claims that any more delays could have an impact on their production for next year.
"I guess they have all of the information that they need now. I don't see why they are going to further delay the decision," Abiteboul said.
Marko says that the decision will be revealed towards the end of June.
"I can't tell you anything until Austria," Marko said.
"We will have facts which we are waiting for and we want to be prepared to make the right decision."
