Max Verstappen eventually crossed the finish line in P5 after a challenging British GP. The reigning world champion had a great Saturday, but had an optimal configuration for dry conditions. Still, team principal Christian Horner saw his team excel in other decisions. With weather conditions were constantly changing, getting on top of the strategy was a key factor at Silverstone.
Verstappen finished only in P5 after starting from pole position, and after the Dutchman was already in a difficult position, the team did well to switch to the slick tyres towards the end of the Grand Prix at the right moment, Horner explained.
Horner emphasizes the importance of Red Bull's good timing
"I think it was important not to go too early and then it was a question of which tyre you put on. The hard tyre last year was the tyre for the last stint. I think as a team we called the pit stops at the right time today. I thought going on to the slicks was very risky at the start of the race," the Briton began.
"The cars that pulled in at the beginning, that seemed to make no sense. And then it was clear that the rain was coming. All the info that we had coming to the pit wall was that the rain was 10 minutes away, 8 minutes away and it was a matter of making sure you survived to that rain that would then be a new set of inters, so you didn't want to make two pit stops."
Verstappen's final spot on says Horner
After Max Verstappen's spin during the second restart, the Dutchman fell down to P10. With his car being optimised for a dry track, he could also gain time with a pit stop at the right moment for slick tyres towards the end of the Grand Prix.
"Then going from the inter to the slick, it seemed to take an age for the track to actually dry up. And as you say getting that crossover I think we timed it optimally to get him on the medium tyre for the end of the race," the team principal concluded.
