There has been a debate about Monaco's continued existence on the Formula 1 calendar for some time. Many stakeholders believe that the street circuit no longer suits the current competition, mainly due to the size of the cars. Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing team principal, also has his doubts about the Grand Prix in the principality.
"I think it's something that we should collectively have a look at. But I think that, it's not racing as such when you're just driving around three or four seconds off the pace because the other car hasn't got any chance of overtaking," the British team boss stated after the race weekend in Monaco.
However, Horner also understands that it is difficult to ditch the Monaco Grand Prix because of the history attached to it. "I think Monaco is such a great place to come racing, but the cars are so big now that we just need to look if we do something that introduces an overtaking area or at least the potential of an overtake."
The paucity of overtaking in Monaco is something that frustrates Horner. But for one driver he had words of praise in store. "The top ten is exactly as it started on the grid and not a single overtake in the top ten. Thank God for Lance Stroll, the only guy that managed to overtake in the race, I think." Stroll in fact made two overtakes after he had a puncture, but he was not the only one to complete a maneouvre outside the Top 10.
