Twice before, Formula One hosted Las Vegas, in 1981 and 1982. Both seasons, the race, officially the Caesars Palace Grand Prix, formed the finale of the season. In 1981, Alan Jones won in the Williams. In 1982, it was Michele Alboreto in the Tyrrell.

At the time, the drivers drove 75 laps of 3.647 kilometers around Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas.
