Red Bull Racing advisor Helmut Marko is far from certain about his case in the run-up to the Austrian Grand Prix. Although the 82-year-old emphasises that there are definitely opportunities for a good result, he suspects that McLaren will have an advantage over the rest of the F1 teams. “The atmosphere is unique and we can look back with pride on the performances we have delivered on this circuit. Of course, with Verstappen we have one of the best drivers of this generation, what we have accomplished over the past 20 years, I never considered possible,” Marko began against oe24.
Red Bull has traveled to Austria with a new rear of the floor. Earlier this week, Marko already indicated that
this could be a crucial turning point in the title fight with McLaren. If this upgrade does not have the desired effect, Verstappen will most likely not be able to compete in the fight for the world title.
Marko on McLaren's Advantage
Although Red Bull brings an upgrade to the team's home race, the Austrian squad's direct competitors are also bringing new parts. In addition, there is an important aspect which, according to Marko, could pose a disadvantage for Red Bull, despite the upgrade. When asked about the effect of high temperatures, he said: “They mean nothing good for us. McLaren will therefore have an advantage.”
Max Verstappen has won five times before at the Red Bull Ring and, according to Marko, can never be counted out.
Verstappen could still receive a suspension this weekend, but Marko is convinced that he will not dwell on it. Ending on a positive note, he declared: “It is the race where he achieved his first victory with a Honda engine. 30,000 Dutch fans are coming to the circuit and it is no coincidence that he has already won here five times. It is easy to be reasonably fast here, but difficult to be truly fast. That's where Max makes the difference.”
