A visibly shaking Lewis Hamilton thanked the home crowd as he took his 76th pole position of his career at Silverstone. The home favourite had it all to do on his final lap but took pole brilliantly from his championship rival Sebastian Vettel.
Speaking to Martin Brundle after qualifying, the pole sitter said he was giving it everything in the British summer heat.
"I gave it everything he could," he said. "It was so close between these Ferraris, the Ferraris just pulled something out when it got to Q3 and I was just praying I could do it for you guys (the fans).
"I'm so grateful for the support because without you guys I wouldn't have been able to do it."
The heat might be helping Ferrari but Hamilton survived the pressure cooker of home to take a fourth straight pole position on home soil.

Vettel lines up second and Kimi Raikkonen will line up third. Teammate Valtteri Bottas will start tomorrows race fourth, a demonstration of just how close it was in qualifying.
