Historically, Max Verstappen does anything but bad at the Circuit of the Americas. He also drove a strong race in Austin in 2017. Just a few corners before the end of the race, he outsmarted Kimi Raikkonen in impressive fashion, but he couldn't enjoy it for long.
Raikkonen raced into second place in the closing stages of the race, but had to give it up to Sebastian Vettel. With just one lap to go Verstappen also joined in, turning it into a thrilling battle for the final podium spot.
Three corners before the finish the Dutchman took his chance and put his Red Bull next to Raikkonen's Ferrari. In doing so he exceeded the track limits and was penalised with a five second time penalty. As a result, he was forced to relinquish his podium position to the Finn, who was a little surprised himself.

Heated discussions about Verstappen's penalty

What followed was a tirade of Jos Verstappen on Twitter and many heated discussions. Many thought the overtaking action was a bit on the edge, but fair. It is questionable whether Verstappen actually gained time by exceeding the track limits. In addition, many viewers feel that the racing itself is punished in this way.
