The FIA has confirmed that the outcome of the ADUO benchmark evaluations for the first threshold will be announced shortly after the Canadian Grand Prix.
Formula 1 is now approaching the first ADUO (Additional Development and Upgrade Opportunities) evaluation threshold, a system introduced alongside the new regulations to allow engine manufacturers struggling on the ICE side to bring additional upgrades beyond the benchmark limits in an effort to keep power unit performance balanced across the grid.
FIA single seaters director Nikolas Tombazis was keen to clarify that the ADUO system should not be mistaken for a Balance of Performance-style mechanism (just like WEC). According to the FIA official, manufacturers qualifying for additional development opportunities would not receive direct performance boosts such as increased fuel flow or ballast adjustments. Instead, he explained that ADUO is designed more as a cost cap relief measure.
“It’s important to make clear that ADUO is not a kind of balance of performance mechanism. A team or manufacturer will not suddenly get greater fuel flow rate or more or less ballast. It is, in fact, a Cost Cap relief mechanism, where a PU manufacturer meeting ADUO criteria during a review period is given an opportunity to develop its engine through a downward adjustment.

“That’s not to underestimate it but a manufacturer will still need to make the best engine in order to win. It’s not a magic bullet, or like the FIA is handing out brownie points to somebody who’s behind, it simply provides them with leeway to develop their power unit within the framework laid out by the Technical Regulations.”

FIA confirm first ADUO threshold evaluation for after Canadian GP

The ADUO evaluation process has been split into three separate review windows across the 2026 Formula 1 season. Originally, the opening phase was meant to cover the first six rounds of the championship, but the calendar changes caused by the situation in the Middle East forced the FIA to revise the structure.
As a result, the first assessment period now includes the opening five races of the year - Australia, China, Japan, Miami and Canada - with the FIA expected to communicate the outcome within two weeks of the Canadian Grand Prix. The second review phase will then run from Monaco through to Hungary, while the final evaluation window will begin at the Dutch Grand Prix and continue until the Mexico City Grand Prix.

Wolff wary of F1 rival ‘gamesmanship’ over ADUO engine upgrades

Speaking to media including GPblog, Wolff stressed that the FIA must ensure the ADUO system is used purely to help underperforming manufacturers close the gap, rather than reshuffle the competitive order at the front of Formula 1. The Mercedes team principal warned that allowing ADUO engine upgrades to influence the 2026 title battle would be both surprising and disappointing, insisting the mechanism should not be exploited for political or strategic gain.

Wolff also underlined the importance of transparency and accuracy in the FIA’s evaluation process, explaining that any decision regarding additional development opportunities could have major consequences on the championship fight if not handled correctly. He finally stressed that the governing body must apply the rules in the proper spirit, with ADUO intended only as a tool to support struggling manufacturers rather than hand rivals a competitive advantage.
